Selecting the right set for you is not an easy task, made all the more confusing by the wide range of prices, styles and brands available in New Zealand today. Here are a few helpful hints to help you select the right set for you.
The first thing to consider is price verses features. Some people shop with a price in mind, others with a specific set of features they are looking for, but everyone wants the most for the least. Remember the most expensive might not be the best and cheap doesn't have to mean compromising on safety. The main differences in price are usually due to features of the package such as whether it has a computer or standard gauges. Other differences may include whether the BCD has additional features such as quick release clips, hip dump valves, padded backpack or integrated weight systems. Differences in regulator 2nd stages may include size and be adjustable.
It pays to shop around for the best deal but take a note of what a set has and doesn’t have, as a lot of sets don’t include basic items such as compasses and octi’s. On going costs is not a big issue as there is not a great difference in servicing costs between most brands in New Zealand. There can however be huge differences in service charges from shop to shop so when getting your reg serviced ask for an estimate first.
