29)Waikoropupu
Springs (Pupu Springs). Amazing very clear water at 62 meters
it is reputed to be the clearest fresh water in the world
(scientist's had to us a system of mirrors to measure this
as the basin is only 42 meters across). The water temp is
a constant 11.7 C.
30)Tonga
Island Marine Reserve. Adjacent Abel Tasman National Park,
the third marine reserve to be created alongside a national
park. It covers an area of 1835 hectares, extending 1852m
offshore from the mean high water mark of Tonga Island, and
the coat between Awaroa Head and the headland separating Bark
Bay and Mosquito Bay. From the land the best snorkeling is
among the rocks between Tonga Quarry and Foul Point. Scuba
diving on reef systems in the north of the reserve, about
15m deep. Sparse cover of seaweed's Pink algae coats much
of the rock, abundant kina and turban shells. Caves and crevices
conceal crayfish and conger eel. Wrasses, blue cod, snapper,
terakihi and moki. also dophins, seals, blue penguins.
31)Riwaka.
Cave dive, freshwater at foot of Takaka Hill. Limestone formations.
Guide essential. V to 20m.
32)Pelores
Sound. Good diving at the entrance. Interesting reefs at Chetwode
and forsyth Island and Duffers Reef. Wiatui Bay exceptional
diving. Alligator Head and Titi Island - good diving. V4-18m.
33)Port
Gore. Can be calm. Two shipwrecks, shallow and deep. Variety
of fish species. Wreck dive - Mikhail Lermontov - Russian
cruise liner lying in 36m. Requires guiding. All weather diving.
Current. Large rocks and kelp in shallow. Depth 4 -15m. Very
interesting wreck Hippalos - 120 year old wooden barque in
deep water but still completely intact. Large numbers of fish
life and crayfish. V 2-10m.
34)Bushelt
Shoals. 1-2km out from land, depth to around 5m, at highest
around 15-30m deepest. Crayfish, blue cod and sharks. Good
photography.
